This year, the Duke University Center for International and Global Studies (DUCIGS) and the John Hope Franklin Center (JHFC) transitioned their signature ‘Wednesdays at the Center’ series into an online format inspired by the legacy of John Hope Franklin. The series, titled “Global Anti-Racism (histories of action)” seeks to address one of the most pressing social and political problems of our time: ongoing structural racism and issues of racial inequality.

The series hosted eight presentations throughout the Fall 2020 semester, including three rebroadcasts of Dr. Franklin’s archival footage from previous Wednesdays at the Center, which were moderated by current Duke faculty and students. Other rebroadcasts included a presentation on race and gender in STEM by Mark Anthony Neal (James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of African and African American Studies at Duke University) and a discussion on John Hope Franklin’s global scholarship by John Gartrell (Director, John Hope Franklin Research Center for African and African American History & Culture).

Additionally, the series welcomed Johanna Fernández (Associate Professor of History at Baruch College of the City University of New York), who presented her new book about the “Young Lords;” Monika Gosin (Associate Professor of Sociology at College of William and Mary), who discussed the interethnic struggles within the immigrant communities in Miami; and Anne-Maria Makhulu (Associate Professor of African and African American Studies at Duke), who discussed the parallels between the racial histories of the United States and South Africa.
