Event Description:

As the #RhodesMustFall movement grew on the University of Cape Town campus in March 2015, a parallel student movement emerged at Stellenbosch University. Open Stellenbosch (OS) campaigned to end exclusionary language-of-instruction policy while forcing a discussion about persistent campus racism.

“Luister” draws on the Open Stellenbosch movement to portray the daily struggles of black university students. Viewed by hundreds of thousands in the first week it aired—almost unmatched in the history of South African internet—the subsequent hashtag #Luister trended in South Africa for weeks. The film eventually triggered a government investigation into Stellenbosch University, a summons of the university management to Parliament, and Stellenbosch University’s commitment to changing its language-of-instruction policy.
